Q: Should I only list work experience that relates to what a customer success manager does?
A: It depends on your experience level. If you have plenty of prior experience as a CSM, it makes sense to include those experiences in this section. However, if you are new to the field, you should include experiences where you have dealt with customers, understood their pain points, worked with a team of stakeholders to solve their problem and received the thumbs up from the customer. This type of experience can happen in sales roles for example where you are still accountable for the success of the customer.

Q: How can I convey that I am qualified to be a customer success manager?
A: You can be very explicit about 3-4 experiences where you have solved a client’s pain point. Be clear about the pain point that you were attempting to solve; mention the relevant metrics whether it be sales, customer satisfaction score, etc. List a few of the stakeholders involved in your particular scenario. Q: What if I don’t have enough work experience?
A: While there are many companies that require 3-5 years of work experience, you can find others that will accept entry-level hires. To stand out, you should look into trusted 3rd party certifications as well as roles in account management and customer support to build your resume.

Q: What skills go on a customer success manager resume?
A: Empathy is by far the most important skill for this job. If you can’t find a way to relate to the customer, it will be impossible to solve their problem. After empathy, skills like negotiation and project management would help convince employers that you’re able to build a coalition and stay organized along the way.
