A: In my experience, very few candidates have prior formal QA experience prior to applying for the role. If you do, certainly include that! It will be much easier to pass our initial screening stage. If you do not, formal experience in software engineering, test engineering or other software-facing roles is considered very good. If you do not have these experiences, try listing experiences that highlight your technical competence as well as your attention to detail.

Q: What qualifies as relevant experience for QA engineering?
A: Practically speaking, experience working on an automated testing program would be the most relevant form of experience. If you do not have this, it would also be relevant to mention experience working with software engineers on testing either a single feature, multiple features or the entire codebase.

Q: What if I don’t have the relevant experience for this position?
A: This may make it difficult, but not impossible, to land a role as a QA engineer. First, it is possible to transfer into this role after some experience as a test engineer. Second, you may be able to get this role if you pursue a coding bootcamp or something similar to get you up to speed on software systems. Third, if you do a great job at showcasing your attention-to-detail in other non-software roles, you may be able to impress the recruiter enough to land an interview. However, I would bet more heavily on the first two strategies.

Q: Do I need coding experience for this role?
A: Some coding experience would go a long way. It would help you identify but also understand the logical bugs more than someone without coding experience. This would help you add more value to the organization which is useful in your long-term career.
